Dermal Fillers
The ageing process causes fundamental changes in the skin, soft tissue and skeletal support structures of the human face. Dermal fillers serve to restore soft-tissue volume and can also be used to address the problem of static wrinkles, furrows and folds.
What is it
Dermal fillers are pure gels that mimics the fluid that normally exists in the skin.
They act to revolumise the face to replace the dermis that has been lost as a result of the ageing process.
We use products called Juvederm and Restylene. These products are gradually absorbed by the body and typically last 9-10 months. Certain areas on the face last longer eg. up to 2 years.
How does it work
Dermal fillers treat static wrinkles (visible when the face is at rest) by being placed below the skin's surface to literally "fill in" or "plump up" the wrinkle or fold.
The filler is injected after application of either a topical anaesthetic or nerve blocker, so is a comfortable procedure.
You may return to normal activities immediately, but avoid exercise for 24 hours or alcohol as the main complication is bruising and both these activities can cause vasodilitation and thus further bleeding.
It is best if you are able to ice the areas for a few hour after the procedure .
We tend to top up as the process of injecting actually stimulates your own bodies production of collagen.
There are other fillers that act in a different way, more longer acting that may be discussed with the Dr eg. Sculptura or Radiesse.
